Walking down the streets of Myeongdong Street, we came across a cosy two-story cafe selling pastries, drinks and even served a brunch menu. It is none other than the popular You Are Here cafe! The aroma of freshly baked pastries, bread and cakes mingled with the brewed coffee fragrance filled the air.
We grabbed 2 different flavoured croissants which were the store’s signature: original and chocolate. We also ordered a hot matcha latte and hot coffee to pair.
The Sight
The croissants were served on a single plate. Just like how croissants should be, the exterior is a flaky-textured layer. The original croissant boasts a beautiful golden brown glistering outer exterior achieved through careful baking while the chocolate croissant was filled with a layer of dark chocolate with almond toppings.
The Smell
All we could smell from the pastries were the predominant scent of the aroma of butter — both comforting and indulgent.
The Sound
As we bit into the croissant, the hollow sound of flakes and crumbles danced in the air. This was especially so with the original flavoured one.
The Taste
The dough of the original croissant had a very pronounced buttery flavour which imparts a luscious richness, melting in one’s mouth. With its flaky texture, the outer layers crumble effortlessly, revealing a soft and pillowy interior. There was also a slight caramel taste. Not forgetting the chocolate-flavoured croissant, the dark chocolate was not overly sweet. The sweetness was just right and complemented the butteriness of the croissant. However, the chocolate croissant was originally refrigerated so it was served cold which makes the dough slightly harder as compared to the original croissant which was served warm as it was being heated.
The Verdict
Drop by You Are Here Cafe during your next shopping spree in the area! It has Instagram-able decorations and a great view of the streets of Myeongdong. If you ever visit this cafe during the Autumn season, you can even enjoy the beautiful scenery of the maple trees right outside the cafe while enjoying the delicacies.
