Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Laksa

Laksa is one of Singapore’s iconic dishes, well-loved by all Singaporeans. Being a sucker for some delicious Laksa, we headed down to Alexandra Village Food Centre to grab a bowl from the Four-time Bib Gourmand-Award Winning Laksa hawker store.

The Sight

The bowl was filled to the brim with a thick intense broth of reddish-orange colour with a tinge of light creamier colour due to the coconut milk. One can spot a few pieces of rectangular-shaped “tau pok” - a type of fried beancurd. Hidden inside the broth below were a generous amount of white slightly thick noodles. A small heap of chopped parsley was lastly garnished at the top of the dish.

The Smell

We were constantly tempted by the rich and spicy aroma from the laksa broth as we carried the bowl on a tray to our table. It was intense. But as a person who cannot really handle their spice, it made me worried whether I could even “tahan” the spiciness.

The Sound

Generally, there aren’t any distinct sounds made from the bowl of laksa other than the constant slurping of the noodles and the savouring of the broth.

The Taste

The broth was definitely the MVP of the entire dish! It was very rich, savoury and as compared to the usual Laksa we’ve eaten, this was slightly spicier (personal opinion - as a person who can’t really take spice) but it gave the spicy adrenaline kick. The thick gravy was creamy and smooth, which makes it very addictive to drink after every mouthful of noodles. But for those who prefer their laksa to be spicier, they can add a spoonful of sambal chilli. The addition of cockles and mini pieces of prawns enhanced the laksa with its seafood flavour. Furthermore, the beansprouts, fishcakes and shredded chicken slices all provided extra savouriness and harmony of flavour to the broth. The noodles were able to soak up every single ounce of broth and melts in one’s mouth. To have the overall experience of the laksa broth, just pop the tau pok into your mouth and the flavour of the broth it was immersed in will burst inside your mouth! However, we felt that maybe with the addition of an egg will be great to complete the dish.

The Verdict

Overall, the laksa is worth a try if you are around Alexandra Market. In our opinion, it might not be the best Laksa in Singapore but it was still a hearty delicacy to satisfy our laksa cravings. The Laksa bowl comes in 3 different sizes - Small, Medium and Large. As the store itself is already rather famous, there can be long queues during the peak hours so do arrive early if you want to avoid the queues. For those who really can’t take spicy food at all but still love Laksa (like me hahaha), remember to grab a cold drink (best if the drink contains milk) to soothe the spiciness!
