Review: Isaac Toast

Famous for its variety of breakfast toast, Isaac Toast has over 700 outlets in South Korea and overseas branches in Taiwan and Malaysia. Sadly, the Singapore branch in 2020 at Plaza Singapura has shut its doors. So, if you ever have the chance to travel to South Korea, you need to head down to Isaac Toast and grab a quick toast to start your day! To start off our day, we ordered the Ham and Cheese Sandwich (~$3 SGD).

The Sight

Though it looks simple with just a thick slice of fried omelette egg, a slice of ham and a slice of almost melted cheese sandwiched between 2 fried white bread, it was a very delicious and a heartwarming breakfast meal. The toast was slotted into a white paper bag so that it is easier for us to hold the warm sandwich.

The Smell

In general, there wasn’t any distinct smell from the toast other than a slightly caramelised scent of the butter that was being brushed on the bread when fried. Overall, it was very aromatic.

The Sound

As we took a bite of the toast, we could feel the crispness of the fried bread, especially the brown crumbs at the sides.

The Taste

Definitely a must-try dish! The egg and the ham made a good combination and the melted cheese enhanced the yumminess of the dish. And, Isaac Toast has its own signature sauce - “their secret recipe” which makes the entire toast honey-like sweet and savoury, causing us to not want to stop devouring it. It was a good idea to add quite a lot of butter to the bread as it made it moist and soft while still keeping the sides crispy. You can also request to add other ingredients such as sweet corn, pickles etc to enhance the flavour even further. But, of course, at an extra cost!

The Verdict

If you ever get an opportunity to travel to South Korea, you definitely need to stop by any Isaac Toast branch and take away one of their toast. It is definitely worth a try considering the tastiness of it, affordability and convenience. Isaac Toast can be easily spotted in South Korea as its branches are usually located in tourist neighbourhoods such as Myeongdong, Hongdae etc. However, most of them only offer takeout so for those of you who prefer to have a place to savour your breakfast with your loved ones and friends in a comfortable environment, you can head down to the Hongdae branch instead which is a cafe sit-down concept. Do note that there is usually a long waiting queue at the more popular branches as it is already a famous must-go place for the locals and even tourists like us. But, not to worry, the ordering and serving time is quite fast so it is pretty efficient. Additionally, they offer a wide range of toast such as Bulgogi Toast, Potato Toast, Shrimp MVP etc for us to choose from.
