Review: Yogiyo

Authentic Korean restaurants are pretty much hidden in far-off places in Singapore. Those that are readily available are bigger food chains which might lack variety in their menu. That’s why we went straight to Yogiyo when we came across it at Beauty World Centre. *not a sponsored article*

We’re not kidding when we say that there are just so many things to choose from on their menu. Just looking at the noodles sections, there are jajangmyeon, jjambbong, spicy buckwheat noodles, cold buckwheat noodles, chewy noodles, spicy dry noodles, banquet noodles and ramyeon. So keep your eyes peeled and your imagination running as we continue on the food jaunt.

This week’s MVP is the bibimbap served in a hot stone pot. They do have the toned-down bibimbap that’s served in a regular metal bowl, but why order that when the stone pot is there asking us to try it?

Bibimbap was traditionally a non-meat dish but is now commonly served with the option of chicken or beef.

The Sight

The colours were a feast to the eyes — white bean sprouts, orange carrots, yellow fried egg, red ssamjang, brown mushrooms and chicken. Everything looks straight out of the nutrition book.

The Smell

Served piping hot, the savoury smell of freshly cooked rice and sesame oil in the bibimbap tickles the nose.

The Sound

A soft sizzle could be heard as we mixed the ingredients together with some ssamjang.

The Taste

Every bite is a sensory experience of the harmonies between spicy, and sweet with pickled and fermented notes. It’s both luscious and crunchy at the same time. To make the most of the experience, we matched it with the side dishes provided. The best part of having bibimbap in a stone pot is the overcooked rice at the sides of the pot — slightly charred and crispy. And we devoured every last bit of it.

The Verdict

If this hasn't got your mouths watering, we don’t know what would. It’s been a long time since we had authentic Korean food. We wished we had a few more stomachs to try out the other dishes on the menu. However, meat lovers might be a little disappointed. Yogiyo kept the bibimbap as authentic as possible and didn’t have as much meat as those found in food courts. But it doesn't matter to us. We’ll definitely be taking a trip down to Beauty World Centre more often next time!
