Our Childhood

We can all agree that in Singapore, the White Rabbit candy has been part of the childhood of many generations. From the pioneer generation to Generation Z, there’s definitely one point in time where we fell in love with this candy.

The White Rabbit candy was launched in 1940 by a Chinese company in Shanghai, Shanghai Guan Sheng Yuan Food Ltd.

The milk-based White Rabbit candy has a soft, chewy texture. Each candy is packaged in a printed waxed paper wrapper with the brands’ iconic red, white, blue and black colour scheme. Inside, the candy is wrapped in a layer of edible “paper” made from sticky rice. As a child, we often stare at the candy in awe and think that we have a super ability to eat “paper”. Always fun to live in our world of fantasy and imagination.

Now, it’s time for a trip down memory lane to see if the White Rabbit Ice Cream matches up with our childhood memories!

The Sight

The White Rabbit Ice Cream sticks true to its origin, having retained its original shape and colour. The ice cream comes in the form of a stick ice cream with a milky white colour similar to condensed milk. It looks just like the White Rabbit Candy but bigger in size and minus the edible “paper”.

The Smell

There is a subtle scent of milky sweetness mixed with a woody scent from the ice cream stick and the cold smell of ice.

The Taste

Being the professional tasters we are, the ice cream will have to go through a series of rigorous taste testing -- licking and eating. To our delight, the ice cream tastes exactly like White Rabbit Candy.

The taste of sweetened milk gently spreads as you lick it. It is the right balance between sweetness and creaminess. After that, the wet outer layer coats the ice cream. The ice cream transforms from a frozen block of condensed milk to a smooth pudding. The ice cream even becomes jelly-like and gives a little wiggle when we shake it. As we take a bite from it, it has a unique chewy texture. Once the teeth get past the chewy outer part created by the melted ice cream, there is a soft crunch, much like biting into finely shaved ice. The added bonus is how slowly the ice cream melts, letting us process these flavours and textures as we take our time devouring it.

The Verdict

It’s very subjective; our views are split. You either like it or not because of the sweetness and unique chewy texture, unlike other ice creams. Even though the ice cream is sweet, it is not as sweet as one would expect having tried the candy. If you don’t like the chewiness you can just lick it instead. The White Rabbit Ice Cream is definitely worth the try if you’re up for the adventure and in need of an energy booster.
