Review: Tamoya Udon & Tempura Singapore

Japanese cuisine spans across a variety of dishes; from sushi to curry and even noodles. Within the realm of noodles there are ramen, udon and soba and each region has its own take on the dish. This week, we’re having some Sanuki udon from Tamoya Udon and Tempura restaurant at Plaza Singapura. (*not a sponsored article*)

A little background of this restaurant: Tamoya Udon was established in 1996 by Chef-Founder Tamotsu Kurokawa and became more popular when he was crowned the “Sanuki Udon Champion” in a reality cooking show, “TV Champion” in Japan. Sanuki udon has been popular in the Kagawa prefecture in Japan. It is characterised by its square shape and chewy texture.

The Black Garlic Tonkotsu Udon and the Snow Crab Creamy Croquette are highly recommended on their menu and that’s what we got.

Black Garlic Tonkotsu Udon

Paired with Tamoya’s signature hand-made udon is a rich and creamy tonkotsu broth mixed with their specially made in-house black garlic oil (aka ma-yu). There’s a distinct and intoxicating fragrance of garlic mixed with the tonkotsu broth. Just a sip of the broth and you’ll be able to taste the richness and heartiness of it all - a clear indication that the pork marrow bones have been boiled over a long period of time. As expected, the udon is very springy and soft. It slides easily into one’s mouth with a slurp. The generous portion of Cha Shu pork, dried crispy seaweed, kelp, bamboo shoots, ajitama egg and fried bits of tempura batter that comes with the udon adds an extra flavour and umami to the dish. It’s a symphony of flavours that works in harmony.

Snow Crab Creamy Croquette

This side dish is a well-liked Japanese-style deep-fried croquette filled with white savoury and slightly sweet creamy sauce combined with bits of snow crab meat. The batter forms a crispy texture when bitten into and the piping hot cream sauce from the insides flows out.

The Verdict

Overall, Tamoya Udon and Tempura Restaurant serves a wide range of noodles from udon to ramen of different broths (truffle, tonkotsu, black garlic, etc.) and an assortment of tempura selections (prawns, oysters, sweet potato, etc.). From ordering, collection and to returning trays, it’s all self-service, which also means that there is no service charge. The restaurant can get very packed during the lunch hours as it is a favourite for office workers to have their meals. So if you prefer to enjoy your meal in a quiet space, try to avoid lunch hours.
