Review: SYIP

Today we’re going to take everyone on a cafe-hopping date at SYIP! *not a sponsored article*

SYIP is what one can describe as a modern minimalist cafe. The all-white interior brightens up the space and creates an inviting atmosphere.

During our visit, we ordered the SYIP Big Breakfast, the Ikura Kombu Capellini and the Blue Pea Lemonade.

SYIP Big Breakfast

The classic big breakfast with sourdough, scrambled egg, bacon, mushrooms, mini hash browns (or tater tots), veggies and a few cherry tomatoes.

Looking at it you might start to imagine the buttery scrambled egg and the fresh fried salty scent of the tater tots — we thought so too.

The sourdough was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Although it may look slightly charred, it’s definitely not. There’s also a slight caramel taste to it. A gentle sweetness to it. The bacon was glazed with maple syrup which mellowed down the saltiness of the bacon. Likewise, the scrambled egg was not the heavily-seasoned nor was it the buttery type, but light on the palette with minimal seasoning. Sauteed mushroom was amazing due to the refreshing crisp and it being highly addictive.

If the SYIP big breakfast was a piece of painting, it would be a watercolour painting — gentle and light. Not so much on the eyes at a glance, but once you look at it closely, you’ll realise you can stare at it all day.

Ikura Kombu Capellini

Plating was perfectto! And very much for the ‘gram. It consists of capellini, sakura ebi, shio kombu and ikura. Rather than calling it an Italian dish, it is very much an Asian fusion. It’s gentle on the palette, with the distinct umami of the shrimp and a slight kick to it. It’s hard to decide if this dish is for us or not. It’s not quite a wow factor but what we can say is that there's definitely a contrast between how it looks and how it tastes. It’s an interesting flavour and it isn’t that heavy on the stomach.

The Verdict

Apart from the aesthetics and food, their staff are exceptionally attentive to customers’ needs. The only downside is that the place can be quite noisy as there’s a lot of echo. You would imagine the place to be as loud as an outdoor hawker centre when it’s full-house, despite its quiet-looking interiors.

Food at SYIP is light, warm and thoughtful with occasional small surprises along the way. It’s something you won’t get sick of eating but somehow doesn’t linger long. Maybe we’ll visit SYIP sometime again.
