Review: Sunday Folks @ Holland Village

It started off with a simple craving for something sweet while we were around Holland Village. Wandering around the back alleys, we came across a snaking queue and a brightly-lit cafe — Sunday Folks. Yes. It’s the queue and us again. Deja vu, huh?

After who knows how long the queue took, we finally got a table. Never missing our chance to customize our dessert, we ordered a waffle with Sea Salt Gula Melaka ice cream, Gula Melaka marshmallows, Chocolate sauce and Gula Melaka sauce.

The Sight

The Sea Salt Gula Melaka ice cream sits right on top of the squarish waffle that was cooked to a dark golden brown colour. We got to say, the ice cream kind of looks like whipped cream. A few pieces of Gula Melaka marshmallows were plated around the waffle. Chocolate and Gula Melaka sauce were drizzled everywhere, from the ice cream to the waffle and even around the serving plate.

The Smell

Right as our waffle got to our table, a rich scent of toffee-like-caramel flavour wafted into our nose. It got to be from all the Gula Melaka toppings that we had ordered.

The Sound

There was just a slight crackle from the freshly baked waffle when it was sliced.

The Taste

So this was how we ate it. We sliced the waffle into small pieces, took a scoop of the ice cream and tried to get as much sauce onto the waffle as possible and then everything went into our mouth. We savoured it and it definitely satisfied our sweet cravings. The salty-sweet ice cream was freezingly cold while the waffle was slightly warmer which helped to neutralise the temperature, preventing us from getting a brain freeze. The Gula Melaka sauce added more caramelised and butterscotchy taste to the dish while the Chocolate sauce just added extra sweetness and richness. The special mention of the dish includes the chewy Gula Melaka coated marshmallows. They were very squishy and were very addictive.

The Verdict

If you want some customised waffles to suit your taste, feel free to head down to Sunday Folks and pick your choice! Although they only offer 3 different flavours of ice cream, they have a wide range of toppings to choose from. As it is already a pretty well-known dessert store, we would like to warn you that there might be a queue especially at night (after dinner time). Additionally, the location can be slightly inconvenient for those taking public transport as there is no bus service there. The nearest MRT station will be Holland Village and a short walk is needed to reach the cosy cafe. But, after a filling dinner, I’m sure a short walk is good for your digestion so that you can enjoy the delicious desserts offered by Sunday Folks when you have reached there! 😊 Not only do they serve waffles, there are also drinks ranging from cold brew coffee to fruit teas available.
