Review: Rollie Olie

Looking for a cosy place to chill with Japanese delicacies like savoury sushi rolls and poke bowls? Head down to Rollie Olie! *not a sponsored article*

Rollie Olie first set foot in Singapore in 2015. They import high quality graded fresh sashimis making their dishes even more delicious. They also offer a great variety of sushi selections with different ingredients and healthy poke bowls — fusioning Japanese and American cuisine.

We ordered the Cali Dream Roll (4 pieces, $8), the Sunkissed Salmon roll (4 pieces, $8), Beachcomber (4 pieces, $8) and Dos Amigos (4 pieces, $8). All the sushi rolls were plated in a beautiful rendition with 4 medium sized tightly-wrapped sushi in seaweed, making it worthy of the ‘gram.

Cali Dream Roll

4 mini slices of bright red strawberries each sat on the top of every Cali Dream roll and were drizzled with a brown eel sauce. Bread crunches sticked onto the white soft sushi rice causing the outer layer of the roll to be decorated with crispy and flaky crumbs. Inside each roll was packed with deep fried prawn, tamago, freshly cut avocado slices and crunchy cucumbers. To add extra flavour to the roll, a slight tinge of citrusy, spicy and sweet yuzu mustard was used as the main sauce to complete the meal. This is the go to roll to get for tempura prawn lovers!

Sunkissed Salmon Roll

As the name says it all, this sushi has seared salmon which can be seen from the charred sides of it and tiny balls of flying fish roe laying at the top of each roll. The inside of each roll was filled with moist cold crab meat that was of natural sweetness, avocado, cucumber and wasabi mayonnaise. Combining all these, the inner layer of the sushi roll felt like it can be serve as a crab meat salad dish by itself. The best part of the roll, the mentaiko sauce which brought out the kick of rich umami flavour.

BeachComber

“Crack, crack, crack…”. We slowly chewed the fried soft shell crab inside the roll. For some, it might be difficult to savour this roll as the shell can be moderately hard to bite into. Mashed prawn salad, cucumbers, avocado were stuffed into the inner layer of the sushi roll. Similarly to the Cali Dream roll, eel sauce was drizzed onto the roll providing extra sweetness. And, not forgetting the baked cheese that rest on the top of each sushi.

Dos Amigos

This sushi rolls calls for all unagi lovers. The grilled eel had a subtle yet sweet flavour which was definitely not fishy at all and the flesh of the eel was also chewy. What makes this unagi sushi roll unique is the addition of cream cheese and tamago! The soft cream cheese was really smooth and was a great combination with the unagi as it provided the extra sweetness. Likewise, the tamago had a custardy texture and added on to the overall sweetness.

The Verdict

If you are looking for interesting selection of sushi rolls, you can give Rollie Olie a try! Even though it might seem expensive for just 4 sushi per plate but each sushi roll is pretty huge and packed with a generous amount of ingredients. One recommendation is to order 2 different types of sushi rolls (4 pieces each) so that you can explore the variety of rolls offered. And, you don’t need to worry about drinks, ice water is free! One of the best thing about this restaurant is that there is only 1% of service charge so with such quality food, the price is reasonable.
