Review: PS. Cafe

We found the perfect hideout for warm gatherings within the bustling CBD — PS. Cafe is a homegrown-brand well known for their indulgent eclairs, cakes and savoury cafe classics.

Our tries for this week include the Lemon and Passionfruit Giant Eclair, Burnt Rum and Raisin Cheesecake and Truffle Shoestring Fries.

Lemon and Passionfruit Giant Eclair ($9)

“It is indeed a giant one!” was the first impression we had when the eclair was placed in front of us. It seemed more like a churro with its length being 4 times the size compared to the regular sized ones at any bakery. Topped with well-spread white lemon cream and passionfruit, it’s a mix of tanginess, sweetness and crunch. The golden-brown pastry was not as flaky and crispy as what we expected it to be. Instead, it was rather soggy. The fluffy pastry was filled with a slightly colder, sweet and sourish smooth cream that made us feel like we were eating ice-cream.

Burnt Rum and Raisin Cheesecake ($12)

Topped with raisins, this dish has a strong caramel-like and alcoholic aroma which can be intimidating for someone who is unfamiliar with alcohol. The exterior of the cheesecake is caramelised but the inside is extremely creamy and smooth. The cheesiness just melts in your mouth. There was a good balance of bitterness from the burnt areas and sweetness from the custardy cheese cream. If you are someone who has a low-tolerance for alcohol and gets Asian-flush easily, take small bites of it.

Truffle Shoestring Fries ($17)

A huge pile of deep-fried thin shoestring fries came and it was topped with a generous portion of grated white parmesan cheese and little bits of parsley. The fragrance of the dish was irresistible due to the high fire “wok” smell and the truffle oil. The fries were crisp and the truffle oil enhanced the flavour of it by adding on earthiness and garlicky taste. A great dish as a snack or an appetizer to be shared among your friends before the main course.

The Verdict

We do agree that the items in PS. Café can be on the pricey side, but it’s the perfect place for long afternoon teas, romantic dates and celebrations with its beautiful interiors. Even though there are quite a number of branches in Singapore, it can be packed so it’ll be best to reserve a table on their official website to get seats with the best views. For dessert lovers, there are a wide variety of sweet cravings ranging from Chocolate cakes to tarts to nougats to puddings to choose from.
