Review: O.BBa Jjajang Express

O.BBa Jjajang has finally opened their express stall at Koufu Headquarters located in Woodlands. Well-known for their authentic Korean noodle dishes and BBQ, the branch at Tanjong Pagar is always bustling. However, the express stall at Koufu Headquarters only serves signature dishes like Jjampong, Jajangmyeon, Tangsuyuk etc.

Now, let’s start diving down to the popular Korean-Chinese fusion dishes!

Jjampong ($9.90)

Filled to the brim with a wide variety of mussels, clams, squid, prawns and a range of vegetables such as cabbage, carrots and onions, the jjampong broth was rich and savoury. The noodles have a slight chewiness and melts in the mouth. Even though the redness of the soup might suggest spice, it's not very spicy at all. In fact, there’s a sweetness to it. One thing to note would be to avoid wearing light coloured shirts to prevent soup stains or get an apron as a precaution.

Jajangmyeon ($7.50)

The Jajangmyeon is covered with a thick layer of starchy black bean sauce (chunjang) and topped with freshly cut strips of cucumbers. The sauce also contains small dices of minced meat and lumps of onions — making every bite filled with textures. Jajangmyeon noodles are slightly chewier and have a glutinous texture as compared to ramen. But, it has a similar thickness as udon. Unlike the Chinese Zha Jiang Mian, jajangmyeon’s sauce has more sweetness to it.

Tangsuyuk ($13)

The best companion with Jjampong and Jajangmyeon has got to be Tangsuyuk, a Korean-Chinese style sweet and sour pork dish! The pork is deep fried till has the perfect crisp and is mixed with a tangy and sweet sauce which is both sweet and sour. The sweetness satisfies every bite while the sourness makes one crave for more. The definition of an irresistible flavour! Depending on the cut of the meat, some pieces can be slightly chewy but overall, the pork was tender. Slices of chopped cucumber, carrots, yellow onions and purple capsicum were also served together with it.

The Verdict

O.BBa Jjajang is your definite go-to for some Korean-Chinese fusion dishes in Singapore! Authentic Korean food can be on the pricey side in Singapore, but the O.BBa Jjajang in Woodlands makes it affordable. You’ll get the same dish at half the price as compared to the one at Tanjong Pagar. The downside is that you won’t get a lot of options. Items like Korean Fried Chicken and BBQ are not available. So, it boils down to your preference; having more food options or a more affordable price point for their signature dishes.

P.S. All the food options come with Korean side dishes (kimchi and yellow pickled radish!)
