Review: Hakka Thunder Tea Rice

Curious of the long snaking queues on the 2nd floor of the newly opened Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, we walked towards it. Turns out, the queue belongs to a store selling Hakka Thunder Tea Rice and Homemade Yong Tau Fu. Of course, we couldn't say no to the queue and ordered 4 pieces of fried Yong Tau Fu with a bowl of rice. (*not a sponsored article*)

The Sight

The deep fried golden brown assortment of Yong Tau Fu (a slice of eggplant, beancurd skin, wanton and a tau kwa with a fishcake on top) were placed on one side of the dish while the white rice sits on the other and completed with sesame seeds were sprinkled at the top.

The Smell

There isn’t much distinct scent from the dish other than the “wokheyness” from the freshly-fried Yong Tau Fu.

The Sound

“Crisp….” could be heard as we munch on the flaky beancurd skin and crispy wanton.

The Taste

The eggplant is definitely a must-have choice. Its sweetness is indescribable as it melts in one’s mouth. As it is fried, there is also a slight charred taste which enhances the flavours. The tau kwa was also very soft and the fishcake was savoury — sweet yet salty. Similarly, the white rice was steamed perfectly — not too soft nor too hard. The downside of the dish is that it can be very dry as there is no gravy for the fried Yong Tau Fu except for the oil. However, the stall does provide the thick sweet brown sauce at the side of the store for dipping and also a bowl of hot soup.

The Verdict

For a dish served in a neighbourhood hawker centre, it might seem a bit pricey but it is still worth a try for those who want to experience some Hakka food such as their signature Hakka Thunder Tea Rice or just want to get some fried Yong Tau Fu to satisfy one’s unhealthy cravings. Each piece of fried Yong Tau Fu costs $1.20 and you can choose how many of them you want to get. It’s best to head down slightly earlier than the typical lunch hours (~12pm) as the queue can be up to a 45 minutes wait.
