Review: East Seafood White Meehoon

Toa Payoh being one of the districts in Singapore known for its delicious delicacies offered in hawker centres located at various “lorongs” (streets all around the neighbourhood). We stopped by Lorong 8 to explore and came across this white beehoon store, East Seafood White Meehoon. Similar to the White restaurant, the stall is famous for their seafood white beehoon which contains ingredients such as prawns, clams, mussels, sliced fishes etc. Other than the seafood option, the stall also serves the dish with sliced fish so we got that one to try out instead.

The Sight

The white thin noodles soaked in a generous portion of broth was plated clumsily on the oval plate with many pieces of sliced white fish and chopped cabbages. But, as the saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, even though it might not look delicious but the taste could tell otherwise. Hidden in the broth were a few pieces of crispy yet slightly soggy pork lad.

The Smell

As the dish was fried with high fire in a wok, we could smell the ‘wokheyness’ with every mouthful of meehoon.

The Sound

There wasn’t any distinct sound made by the dish but rather the only sound was us slurping and enjoying the broth-soaked noodles and fully immersing ourselves in the delicacy.

The Taste

It was savoury as the broth was rich from the flavours of sea. However, it can be slightly on the saltier side for some. The thin and soft meehoon just melts in one’s mouth. The pieces of sliced fish were not an ounce too fishy while the meat was soft and a bit chewy. It added extra sweetness to the entire dish. The chopped cabbage was crunchy too! The pork lad just finishes off the dish with the natural fats and oil, making it irresistible.

The Verdict

It might not be the best white meehoon dish in the entire Singapore, but it is definitely one of those go-to-places for affordable white meehoon ($6 for small) to satisfy our cravings. Furthermore, they have different portion sizes to choose from so it can be ordered for sharing too! If you are a seafood lover, make sure to try out their prawns, lala and fish white meehoon. There is usually a queue in the evening but the cooking time is usually quite fast. If you are near the Toa Payoh area and don’t know which lorong to go, Lorong 8 could be your saviour with loads of delectables waiting for you to try out!
