Review: Cheeky Scones

Being in London, we most definitely can’t afford to miss the classic British afternoon tea staple — scones. While wandering around the Notting Hill area we came across Cheeky Scones and decided to grab one to-go.

We got the sultana scone with orange marmalade jam.

The Sight

Baked to a golden brown colouring, it has a visible crisp texture which hints at the hardened outer layer. One can see the sultanas scattered across the scone and the pop of white icing sugar sprinkled on top.

The Smell

It’s the smell of fresh bakes and sweetness! Nothing more and nothing less.

The Sound

A very dull crunch is made as we bite into the scone as only the outer layer is hard.

The Taste

Without the jam, there is a slight sweetness from the scone as well as the icing sugar. The sultanas on the outside have been baked and gives off a roasted scent and bitter taste whereas the sultanas on the inside are sweet. Every bite is filled with the layers of textures — crisp and soft; the layers of flavours — sweet and bitter. The orange marmalade just helps to blend everything together and provide a little more moisture with a citrusy taste. Though we wouldn’t say having a jam to pair is needed.

The Verdict

Overall, it would have been better if we had the scone right at the shop so we could get it hot. But even when it’s cold, it’s still delicious. It’s the perfect pairing with some hot black tea or coffee. Those heading to the UK, don’t forget to grab some scones!
