Review: 108 Matcha Saro

It’s matcha jaunt with us again! This week, we will be reviewing the Matcha Hokkaido Soft Serve and Singapore-exclusive Double-Chocolate with Matcha Obanyaki from 108 Matcha Saro. *not a sponsored article*

108 Matcha Saro originated from Hokkaido, Japan whereby it first started at Asahikawa in 2014 which had a building number of 108. The shop offers a wide variety of matcha goods ranging from soft serves to obanyakis to parfaits to lattes and even mochis!

Matcha Hokkaido Soft Serve ($4.90)

A smooth and creamy twirled matcha ice cream sits on top of a crispy cone. The first lick leaves you with a brain freeze due to the coldness of the ice cream. As you continue to battle against the pain and slowly devour the soft serve, you can taste the bitterness of the matcha and a pleasant savoury ending (‘umami’) as it melts in your mouth instantly. That tinge of rich bitterness from the soft serve felt like fresh brewed green tea leaves just harvested from the mountains in Japan. Overall, the ice cream was irresistible and definitely worth a try especially as a refresher or a treat for yourself!

p.s. You may opt in for additional sweetness by adding a few dashes of brown sugar sauce as a topping and it is free-of-charge! Before you collect your ice cream, just let the waiter know and they will drizzle it onto your soft serve for you.

Double-Chocolate with Matcha Dough Obanyaki ($3.50)

Fresh out from the pan, the steaming hot obanyaki is wrapped around and served in a white paper bag. Inside the matcha-doughed obanyaki, you can find 66% rich melted valrhona chocolate and sweet chocolate custard. The dough is really chewy and a sharp bitterness from the matcha can be tasted.

The dark black chocolate is rather astringent and has a rich cocoa smell. It is best eaten when it is just served as the chocolate slowly gets absorbed into the dough, making the obanyaki drier and it might not be as appetising as before. As this is an Singapore-exclusive snack, it is worth a try before it goes off the shelves.

The Verdict

For matcha lovers and those who crave some good and rich matcha, do give it a try! There are many matcha-flavoured snacks and beverages available for you to choose from. The only disappointing thing is that 108 Matcha Saro only has takeaway stores in Singapore. We hope that they will branch out to open cafes so that people like us can relax in a comfortable environment and enjoy the delicious matcha feast.
