Review: Maccha House 抹茶馆

Calling all matcha lovers! To satisfy our sweet tooth cravings, we visited the Maccha House at Orchard Central for a late-night dessert.

Short intro on Maccha House, it is a restaurant which offers a variety of Japanese cuisine food ranging from rice bowl sets (Teriyaki Chicken, Salmon etc), ramens and not forgetting matcha drinks and desserts!

We ordered the Matcha Cheese Mango Dorayaki ($11.90 - inclusive of service charge and GST) as it is a new item on the menu. Other flavours available are strawberry and chocolate fillings. Originally, the dish was served with half vanilla half matcha ice cream but we requested a change to get a taste of the full matcha soft serve. The good thing is that there is no extra charge.

Matcha Cheese Mango Dorayaki

It had three layers of dorayaki (pancakes made from castella; originated from Japan) with mango cubes, whipping cream and cheese fillings. The pancakes were coated with a thick layer of matcha cream and drizzled with a sweet brown syrup. Apart from the dorayaki, there is a small bowl of green tea soft serve and 2 mini sticky shiratama dumplings plated with azuki beans with a tiny piece of yuzu strip on top.

On the first bite, you will be struck with an overwhelming sweetness in your mouth due to the soft dorayaki and juicy mango cubes. The cheese adds a tinge of saltiness to the existing flavour as it melts in your mouth. This dish will not be complete without matcha cream. The strong and rich matcha helped neutralise the sweetness exploding inside your mouth with its natural bitterness, making it indispensable. It’ll leave you craving for more.

Don’t get too immersed in the dorayaki. There’s still the pure matcha soft serve! “Mmmm…” was all we could think of in our minds after a scoop of the ice cream. At the start, you can taste the earthiness and sweetness of the soft serve and after a while, a slight bitterness lingers in the mouth. Every spoon of ice cream is accompanied by the aroma of matcha powder. Pairing it with the dorayaki gives it a refreshing and cooling sensation that’s definitely worth a try!

Although the dumplings and azuki beans are just a side dish, they are equally delicious. The dumplings are made of glutinous rice flour and are really chewy and soft. Since it had no fillings inside, it made a great pair with the red bean paste which enriched the saccharinity of the rice balls. The yuzu strip gave a kick of sourness when eaten together.

The Verdict

For matcha lovers, it is worth a try as Maccha House has a wide range of matcha items available (from drinks to desserts) and at an affordable price. Their matcha powder is mainly imported from Kyoto, Japan which is the birthplace of green tea. Therefore, it is extremely famous for its high-quality rich matcha powder. The pure matcha soft serve is just what you need after a scorching afternoon walk along Orchard Road. Do try to be patient with the queue as it can be quite a wait especially during peak hours.

Fun fact: Doraemon’s favourite snack is dorayaki! 😆
