Review: Fu Lin Tofu Yuen

Seeking for reasonable hawker food in a Central Business District area? Head down to the Fu Lin Tofu Yuen cafeteria at Suntec City Tower 1 to enjoy a hearty meal! This restaurant is known for their signature “Yong Tau Foo” a popular hawker dish among Singaporeans. Just like your typical “Mala” or salad stall, a wide variety of ingredients ranging from vegetables to tofus are available for you to choose and customise your own “Yong Tau Foo” ($7.80). All you need to do is just grab an empty plate, a pair of tongs and start choosing. Easy-peasy!

The Kuey Teow

In a medium-sized bowl, the fragrant minced meat, mushrooms and fried onions broth was filled to the brim. The aroma is somewhat a mix of soy sauce, vinegar and eggs (starting to get hungry again after describing this). So we stuck our chopsticks and give it a stir before lifting up the white kuey teow hidden beneath. Not leaving any thing out, the viscous broth coats the soft and slippery kuey teow. Every slurp contains the savoury taste of mushrooms and meat. Pro tip: Make sure you use a spoon for this before the kuey teow slides back into the bowl and make a huge splash.

The “Yong Tau Foo”

For our own customised bowl of Yong Tau Foo, we got eggplant, a variety of beancurd skins, processed fish finger, fishcake stuffed with small chunks of meat and crab meat. We opted for the dry version of Yong Tau Foo, so our food items will be deep-fried before it's served. So…into the wok they go! To complete the meal, the same palatable broth was poured onto the freshly fried ingredients. We slowly bit into the crispy tofu skin rolls and the flavours of the shrooms and minced meat burst into our mouth. So shiok! The sweet eggplant just melts in your mouth and the fish finger has a crusty finishing.

The Verdict

Overall, it was a satisfying meal and our stomachs were full. Though it might have been a bit pricey for a hawker food, it is still worth it considering the central location and huge portions. For the $7.80 set meal, you are only allowed to choose 6 items from the whole section of ingredients available so do choose wisely! If you want to experience the burst of flavours in your mouth, please remember to grab the tofu skin rolls or any beancurd rolls. They are a definite must-have in Yong Tau Foo. Additionally, if you are the type of person who prefers soupy stuff, you can opt for the soup version of Yong Tau Foo instead of the dry one.

P.S. Do head over to the cafeteria before lunchtime (12pm) on weekdays if not you will be caught in the bustling crowd of office workers.
