The Revival Of Pasar Malam

You heard it right! More pasar malams are returning as our government eases on Covid-19 restrictions — even our favourite one right outside Woodlands MRT station.

After two years of hiatus, the pasar malam outside Woodlands MRT is finally making a comeback and things are better than ever! Even the heat couldn’t stop us from swarming there and experiencing the pasar malam culture once again.

What’s Pasar Malam?

First, let’s dive into what pasar malams are so our fellow food jaunters from across the world can have a better understanding of it.

Pasar malam is a Malay word which translates to ‘night market’. In Singapore, these pasar malams will usually be open in the evening and that’s when the crowd starts to gather. Often opening near residential areas, the stalls there feature a variety of goods ranging from snacks, local delights, fresh fruits, childhood toys, vintage goods to funfair games. And it looks something like this!

And this!

The Woodlands MRT Pasar Malam

Coming right back! We visited the pasar malam at Woodlands MRT last Sunday afternoon and it was packed. You see people queueing at every stall. The heat, the crowd and the smell of freshly cooked food just sums up what it’s like at a pasar malam.

Like all Singaporeans, without any hesitation, we went to the longest queue. Who doesn’t like queuing, right?

The Sweet Potato Ball stall has the longest queue, so we figured out that it must be extremely delicious given the crowd. Turns out, the queue was long because there was a shortage of manpower at the stall. There’s only one person making and packing the food. Well, at least the sweet potato balls weren't a disappointment. Each sweet potato ball is about the size of a takoyaki ball, but it’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Even though it’s fried, it isn’t very oily at all. It also kind of tastes like a waffle but since it’s thicker than a waffle, it’s actually quite a satisfying snack with loads of sweetness.

It has been a long tradition for pasar malam fans to grab some TeoChew Meat Puffs. For those who don’t know, the uncle has been making those mouth-watering UFO-shaped meat puffs since before we were babies. And we can guarantee that the one we had last weekend tastes exactly like what it was 10 years ago — crispy outer, juicy and well-marinated meat fillings; basically the embodiment of deliciousness. There are a couple of different fillings to choose from namely oyster, vegetable, prawn, octopus, crab and scallop. Interestingly, there isn’t a queue in front of the stall because they started a ticket system so people don’t have to stand in front of the stall and wait to collect their food. And fyi the wait took about 1.5 hours. So, we’ve learned from our lesson, the physical length of a queue doesn’t always equate to deliciousness. Learn from us. Another quick tip is to visit the meat puff stall first and make your order so you can roam around the other stalls while waiting for your food to be ready.

There are loads of other food to enjoy such as XL chicken patty, freshly made otah, Korean corn dog and milkshakes!

Guess that’s it! GTG! We have an appointment with all the other food! 💨
