Prata: Sugar VS Curry

The Roti Prata is an Indian flatbread that is made by repeatedly stretching and flipping the dough for its soft and springy texture. Being one of our local favs, it comes in many different faces and has a variety of pairings to go. But the great debate lies in what is THE BEST pairing with Roti Prata? Is it sugar or curry?

Sugar With Prata

Sugar is the most basic combination of all and probably what most people started their prata journey with. Having lower spice tolerance and a sweet tooth as a kid, your parents would have served you prata with sugar. The sugar makes every bite of prata filled with sweetness. As the sugar might not be fully granulated, there might be a crunch in each bite. Honestly, it’s just like a sugary doughnut, minus the thickness. Who doesn’t like a good sugar rush?

Curry With Prata

The mature palette. When you’re old enough to handle your spice and make an upgrade from the ‘kids’ palette of sugar. Curry might just be the ultimate evolution of prata pairing. The curry adds a certain amount of spiciness, sweetness and saltiness kick to it while moistening the prata. Some curry combinations include fish head curry and chicken curry etc. The savouriness of this pairing also makes you crave for more.

The Verdict

Both are considered classic prata pairings and we might never get an end to this debate between which is the superior. One thing we do know is that having too much sugar doesn’t make the doctor happy. So maybe cut down on the sugar dips the next time you’re having prata with sugar.
